It would quickly become the largest secular Ukrainian organization in the country, up until the Second World War. In 1940, the organization was declared illegal and all its assets, including temples, libraries, etc. were seized and placed under the care of the Custodian of Enemy Alien Property. In 1943, the ban was removed and some of the property was returned, but for buildings sold "to preserve the equity" in the previous 3 years. (Inventory #: 001793)
