New York: The Dial Press. Good. (c.1941). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [solid but shopworn book, slight bumping to bottom corners, soiling to covers and bottom edge of text block]. Novel about four young musicians, "each of whom was sure he was a genius": a headstrong and ambitious concert pianist; a violinist who recognized the limitations of his talent and became a doctor instead; a poor boy with great talent, but whose circumstances led him to become a vaudeville accompanist; and a child prodigy "whose talents were greater than his physical attainments." Per the jacket blurb (NOT present on this copy), the book "is a complete picture of musical life in all its phases, from the private subscription concerts to Carnegie Hall, from Broadway musicals to Hollywood extravaganzas." (There's enough content related to the latter to consider it at least a marginal "Hollywood novel," although it's omitted from the Slide bibliography.) There are some sacrificing women involved, too. . (Inventory #: 21175)
