by Jaeger, E R von Jaxtthal - OPHTHALMOLOGY
Vienna: k. k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1861. First Edition.. Original prtd. wrappers.. Good; occasional light dustiness; backstrip reinforced with later paper overlay.. 8vo. There are five lithographic plates of the retina and lens sections; table.
An important book. It is Jaeger's observations on his years of study of normal and abnormal eyes and the factors effecting eyesight. There are interesting collateral topics taken up in the text, e.g., the chemical composition of the liquids bathing the eyeball etc.. It precedes Helmholtz and Donders (who acknowledged Jaeger as a major source). Jaeger's book is filled with many original and important observations (Lesky) for new borns and adults. He modified and advanced the science of ophthalmoscopy and its instrumentation (Gorin) to complete the research for the book. The illustrations in the book are reminiscent of the fine work in Pagenstecher's atlas issued years later. Becker #205; see Hirsch; Gorin; Lesky. (Inventory #: 495)
