Wraps
1977 · (Sacramento)
by Fred Schoonmaker (T.A. Munchkin)
(Sacramento): Munchkin's (Nordmann), 1977. Wraps. Very good +. Octavo size, [24] pp. plus the wraps, with related promotional letter and "Munchkin's Savings Club" card. The "Munchkin's OZ Coloring Book" was designed to encourage young children to open educational savings accounts. Per the promotional letter loosely laid in, "The purpose of this savings account is to encourage you, the leaders of tomorrow, to save for your future, now. But, more importantly, this account will help you develop an interest in EDUCATIONAL SAVINGS, so when the time comes, you will be able to afford the type of education you want."
Sponsored by Munchkin's Ice Cream and Continental Savings and Loan, the child was to colour in the entire booklet, and then do two things: one, bring the book into Munchkin's for a free ice cream cone; and, two, bring the book to Continental Savings and Loan. They would open an account for the child, and deposit the first $1.00. Subsequently, for every ice cream a child had at Munchkin's, they would receive a Munchkin's Savings Club Coupon. For every 25 coupons they brought into the bank, accompanied by $1.25 of the child's own funds, the bank would credit their account with $2.50. Accompanying the booklet (which was never coloured in) is the promotional typed letter explaining the rules of the savings club, as well as Savings Club card.
The children are pictured in the book against a back-drop of San Francisco iconic places: the Golden Gate Bridge and the Trans-America Pyramid on the front wrap, boarding a cable car, entering Chinatown, and a visit to "Abracatraz", the island of the witch's castle (and, yes, they DO meet the Wizard of Oz).
According to the promotional letter, 10,000 of these booklets were published. However, as of today, we see no copies online and our search of OCLC locates no copies.
___DESCRIPTION: Coloring book bound in tan illustrated wraps with stapled binding, with illustrations filling almost the entirety of every page and the text below; octavo size (8 1/2" by 5 /1"); accompanying the booklet (which was never coloured in) is the promotional typed letter explaining the rules of the savings club, as well as Savings Club card.
___CONDITION: Booklet better than very good, the stapled binding strong, the interior is clean and bright, and not only not colored in but entirely free of prior owner markings; the staples just beginning to rust, the top back corner of the wrap gently creased, the prior owner must have attached all three items using a large paper clip, with rust marks showing on the back wrap of the booklet, a bit showing on the letter (which was folded once horizontally), and on the front of the Savings Club Card, the letter also better than very good with light wear and toning at the edges, the Club card would be near fine if not for the rust, with minimal edgewear. Truly a remarkble survivor of the initiative to help encourage children to save for education, of interest to both Oz collectors as well as historians of San Francisco.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
