1864. · New York
by [Perrault, Charles (sourcework)]: Ludlow, Fitz-Hugh
New York: John A, Gray & Green ..., 1864.. 36pp. 12mo. Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume. Annotations relevant to an early production, last two leaves spotted, with short tear at fore-edge of terminal leaf and signs of early marginal strengthening, otherwise a good copy. First edition of this uncommon publication by Ludlow (1836 - 1870), best known for his autobiographical work, 'The Hasheesh Eater', and his prolific periodical journalism. This copy was evidently utilized in an early production. Act three, scene 1, is lightly lined through with blue pencil, and annotated "another act in place of this" at the top of p.23 and a few scattered annotations elsewhere. Accompanied by two cards, the first a cast list peppered with members of the George V. Hecker family, and by an engraved invitation: "Mrs. George V. Hecker, At Home, Thursday evening, January fifth. Cinderella by the Children, at 8 o'clock, 256 Madison Avenue." Both have residue on the verso from former mounting. OCLC records two versions, one with "The Metropolitan Fair" caption at the head of the title-page (3 copies), and one, as here, without that headline on the title (6 copies located). Not in Roden. OCLC: 41261638 & 71249129. (Inventory #: WRCLIT88685)
