Troy, NY: Elias Gates, 1840. Thick 8vo. 7, 625 pp. Contemporary brown calf rubbed and worn, gilt stamped black morocco spine label. Index in the back damp-stained. Amos Eaton (1776-1842) originally studied law, but became increasingly interested in the natural sciences. By 1815, he was studying under Professors Ives and Silliman at Yale. He began giving public lectures on botany in the towns of western Massachusetts, and was the author of several books on the subject. [see his biography in the DAB].
