Boards
1879 · Portland
by Sturtevant, Mrs. S. M.
Portland: S. H. Colesworthy, 1879. Boards. Very Good. [6], [7]-96 pages. 4 3/8 x 3 3/8 inches. Cloth over orange papered printed boards. Previous owner's name and date (1883) penciled on second flyleaf. Marginal damp-staining lower right corner throughout. Occasional foxing. Covers dirty with some wear to edges of boards. But still a nice copy. Occasional woodcuts in the text.
The title page appears to have been printed with a date of 1848 (best guess under the magnifier) with some light abrading to the '4' and a '7' overstamped on top of it. The front board contains the same information as the title page, albeit in bolder typefaces presumably for marketing purposes. The front board is dated 1879 in italics however. Printed by C. W. Pennel & Co, priunters, at 65 Exchange Street, Portland [Maine?]. Boards. Table of Contents includes "Christmas Day, The First Christmas Gift, The Two Roads of Life, The Procession of the Months, New Year's Evening, and A Song for the Old Year.
The American Antiquarian Society holds examples dated 1848 and 1878. Our example with the overstamping on the title page perhaps explains a printer's error rather than the same title printed many years apart. (Inventory #: 28920)
