first edition Stapled wraps
(c.1944) · (n.p.)
by Fuller, Samuel Michael
(n.p.): Editions for the Armed Services, Inc.. Good. (c.1944). First Edition Thus. Stapled wraps. [moderate wear to all corners and along spine, short diagonal crease at bottom right corner of front cover, other miscellaneous wrinkling and soft creasing in front cover, faint beverage ring on front cover, some scrunching near spine to the bottom edges of a group of pages, light stain on top right of text block (no bleed onto pages)]. This pocket-size printing of Fuller's newspaper/mystery yarn has its own special place in his personal mythology: by the author's own account, he first encountered his book in published form in this very edition -- in France, shortly after D-Day, when he observed another G.I. reading a copy. He later dramatized this incident in "The Big Red One" (both book and film) -- re-titling the book "The Dark Deadline." (According to Fuller, he'd left the first draft of the novel with his mother before he shipped out -- intending to revise and polish it after the war -- and she had proceeded to make the deal for its publication.) .
