Front board a little bowed, faint stamps on front and rear cover "Withdrawn State College of Washington Library", edges a little rubbed, library label tipped to front pastedown, rubberstamp from "Early Birds Club, Mexico" on verso of title page, library number at bottom margin of ff "A", terminal free endpaper with two small holes at bottom, light occasional foxing; albeit a nice tight copy. Second edition with an errata leaf. A history of the uses, abuses and the properties and virtues of tobacco, coffee, tea and chocolate. The first part deals with tobacco, its history, its preparation by the Indians, its uses including its medicinal uses and the favourable conditions for its use. It also talks about climate and conditions for growing tobacco, as well as the beneficial uses of dry and pulverized tobacco. The other parts deal with coffee, tea and chocolate in a similar manner. . Book id# 19835. Missing since June 2007 2. BLANCKLEY, Thomas Riley. A Naval Expolitor, Shewing and Explaining the Words and Terms of Art Belonging to the Parts, Qualities, and Proportions of Building, Rigging, Furnishings, Fitting a Ship for Sea. Also All Species that are Received into the Magazines and on What Services They are Used and Issued. Together With The Titles of all the Inferior Officers Belonging to a Ship; with an Abridgment of Their Respective Duties. London: Printed by E. Owen in Warwick Lane, and Engraved by Paul Fourdinier at Charing Cross, 1750. 191 pp. Illustrated with engraved title and 330 marginal engravings, three larger engravings in text. Quarto, later full speckled polished calf ruled and decorated in gilt, red and brown gilt lettered spine labels. Slight toning of title page, else fine. First edition. With the bookplate of Donald V. Reardon. An interesting and decorative marine dictionary. The engravings are very finely executed and illustrate the text clearly. All manners of word of nautical reference are explained, from A-Baft to Yawes. A contemporary hand has elaborated on the last few words, making for interesting addenda. The four page list of subscribers includes, amongst others and as one might expect, Lord Halifax and others of England's notables of the time. Roeding thought this was the best English book of its kind prior to Falconer. The inscription, dated 1851 at the top of the dedication page in brown ink, to "James Aviss ... from his father" was most likely by Robert Aviss of Baltic Wharf, Putney, who lists himself as a "builder".  Donald V. Reardon (1914-2005) of San Francisco was a naval architect  particularly interested in bookbinding, which he did himself, and collected maritime books for over sixty years. . Book id# 26968.
